The Season of Easter – April Clergy Reflection

The Season of Easter - April Clergy Reflection
Published: 03 May 2025

As the season of Easter continues to unfold, we find ourselves in a period rich with meaning and reflection. Over the coming weeks, Blackburn Cathedral will be host to a series of important occasions that speak both to our faith and to our shared life within the wider community.

On Sunday 11th May we will mark Victory in Europe Day with a special afternoon service at 4pm to remember those who gave their lives in the pursuit of peace and freedom during the Second World War. We will be joined by His Majesties Lord-Lieutenant, civic dignitaries, members of the armed forces and cadets for this time of prayer and remembrance to which all are invited.

Earlier in the day, following the main morning service, our APCM will be held. This is a key moment the Cathedral year to review our shared ministry, receive reports from across Cathedral life, elect our churchwardens and confirm our wonderful team of Stewards. We will also have an opportunity to visit the Crypt to marvel at significant renovations work undertaken. Please do attend if you can; your presence and participation are an important part of our common life and witness.

This year, Civic Sunday, will be held on Sunday, May 18th, and is a wonderful opportunity for us to pray for those who serve in public office and to celebrate the life of our civic community. We are honoured to welcome local dignitaries, representatives of civic life, and members of the wider community to this special service of thanksgiving and prayer. Please note the change of service time to 11.30am – all welcome.

Ascension Day marks a pivotal moment in the Easter story as we remember Christ’s ascension into heaven. The period of celebration now turns into a period of waiting for ten days until Pentecost and the pouring out of the Holy Spirit on the disciples. Do join us if you are able for our special Ascension Day Eucharist at 7.30pm on Thursday, 29th followed by Checks & Greys refreshments!

Each of these services holds its own significance, but all remind us of the enduring hope and unity we find at the heart of the Easter story. I warmly invite you to join us at the Cathedral as together we continue to serve our local community and county in proclaiming the good news of God’s enduring love for the world and our commitment to serve others as he served us.

With every blessing

The Very Revd Peter Howell-Jones
Dean of Blackburn
