The Diocese of Blackburn

The Cathedral is the Seat of the Bishop, our ministry is closely linked with his ministry and the work of the wider diocese.

The Diocese of Blackburn is a regional part of the Church of England and covers most of Lancashire, as well as parts of neighbouring counties.

The Cathedral, as mother church of the Diocese of Blackburn, serves the County of Lancashire. The Diocese has a rich mix of urban and rural, with areas of affluence and of deprivation.

There are 211 parishes and 280 churches divided into 14 Deaneries, together with a mix of chaplaincies, fresh expressions and pioneer ministry.

Bishop Philip is the tenth Bishop of Blackburn, the most senior Bishop in the Diocese of Blackburn. He was previously suffragan Bishop of Burnley in this Diocese; a post he held from 2015 to 2023 when he was translated to Blackburn.
