Blackburn Cathedral Visitor Guide

Learn more with our Visitor Guide, published in 2010.

This informative guide book aids visitor and reader alike through the Cathedral’s history and eclectic contents, revealing the religious significance of its many treasures, including John Hayward’s dramatic sculpture, Christ the Worker, and Mark Jalland’s fibre-optic globe, The Healing of the Nations.

Blackburn Cathedral is a magnificent example of modern architecture, and the end result of many transformations. A church was first recorded on the site in the Domesday Book.

In 1926 the parish church of St Mary the Virgin was raised to Cathedral status, and following an ambitious extension, Blackburn Cathedral was eventually consecrated in 1977, its breathtaking lantern tower a beacon of hope to the Lancashire town.
