Astonishing stitching on show at Blackburn Cathedral: creating the world in eight million stitches!
Opening soon: an astonishing textile art exhibition at Blackburn Cathedral. ‘Threads through Creation’ consists of twelve enormous, embroidered silk panels that explore the story of creation in the bible. The scale, skill and artistry is extraordinary.
Touring twenty cathedrals, the show has been inspiring hundreds of thousands of visitors. Textile artist Jacqui Parkinson has created a vibrant narrative with spectacular designs that are highly engaging for everyone – and great fun for children too.
The panels are huge – 1.5m/8ft high by as much as 4m/13ft wide. Jacqui uses layers of silk, hand-dyed materials, metallic leathers and gold leaf, miles of thread – and more than eight million stitches!
The Dean of Blackburn, the Very Reverend Peter Howell-Jones, said:
“People enjoy the peace and beauty of the Cathedral, and now is a particularly good time to visit. Jacqui Parkinson’s exhibition introduces extraordinary colour and pattern into the creation story. Whatever your age or background, you’ll find inspiration, pleasure, excitement and a bit of fun too in these astonishing textile panels.”
‘Threads through Creation’ is on show at Blackburn Cathedral from 6th March to 14th April. It’s breathtaking, it’s inspiring … and is not to be missed!
Admission is free, and donations are gratefully received.
