Blackburn Cathedral Launch Organ Appeal

Our Walker organ is famous around the world for its remarkable sound, innovative design and unique appearance. We have launched an Organ Appeal to help raise the funds needed to undertake a comprehensive restoration of this iconic instrument.
International interest in our Walker organ has grown in recent years thanks to the rise of ‘Hauptwerk’ (which allows our organ to be played in digital form at home) and the rise in streaming technology. The work that needs to be done will save considerable sums in regular repairs, as well as maintaining our unique musical heritage.
Everyone who plays our organ is overwhelmed by the breathtaking experience; we need to act now to ensure that this instrument remains in the best possible condition.
When the organ was built in 1969, it was the result of an act of extreme generosity from Mr. William Thompson of Burnley, Lancashire.
We now need to raise £250,000 to restore the organ and have created the Organ Appeal to supplement any grant funding that we may receive. Restoring the organ will be cost-prohibitive without the support of members of the public.
John Robinson, Director of Music said at the launch of the Appeal:
This is a wonderful opportunity to ensure this significant musical treasure continues to inspire generations of organists and composers whilst contributing so significantly to daily worship.
As music is crucial to the life of the Cathedral, we hope all who love Blackburn Cathedral, its music and our Walker organ in particular will contribute towards the Appeal and we would be most grateful for any support that you can offer.
