Blackburn Cathedral Launch Earth Photography Competition

Photographers of all ages and skill levels from anywhere in the United Kingdom are invited to enter a prize photography competition to coincide with the installation of Gaia at Blackburn Cathedral this Autumn.

This fantastic, free to enter competition only has one theme – Earth!

Shortlisted entries will be displayed in a special exhibition during the installation of Luke Jerram’s Gaia at Blackburn Cathedral from 6th October until 16th November 2025.

Whether you have a photo ready to go that fits the theme, or this presents a fresh challenge to capture something new, this competition is for you.

Here are all the details you need to know:


Competition Details

Theme: ‘Life on Earth’
The only requirement is that your image should represent ‘life on earth’ in some form and entrants are free to interpret this theme as they wish when entering.

Start date: 1st March 2025
Closing date: 23:59, 31st August 2025
Entry fee: Free

Prizes: In addition to seeing shortlisted images displayed in a prestigious photography exhibition throughout November and your work viewed by tens of thousands of visitors, there is also the chance to win a cash prize:

£500 for the overall winner.
£250 for a highly commended entrant.
£250 for The ‘People’s Choice Award’

The People’s Choice Award

In addition to the two prize-winning images selected by the judges, one image will also be selected from the shortlisted entries as a ‘People’s Choice Award’ as visitors vote for their favourite image throughout the installation of Gaia, with the winner being notified thereafter.

Judging

The competition judging panel will be made up of key personnel from a range of disciplines. Full details of the judges will be released in due course.

The judging panel will consider images according to criteria comprising:

•  Interpretation and application of the competition theme
•  Technical skills
•  Artistic merit
•  Originality
