At the heart of the large-scale displays is a rare original 1535 edition of Tyndale’s English New Testament on loan from the British Library.

First printed in 1526, it was a decisive moment in the story of English Christianity, public worship, and the English language itself. On display until Wednesday 18th November 2026, this fascinating exhibition focuses on Tyndale’s legacy of translation and the technologies that have carried Scripture to ordinary people. It tells Tyndale’s dramatic story as an innovator, Bible smuggler, reformer, and martyr.

It shows how God’s word has been consumed using the available technology of the time: from the scroll to early printing techniques, to contemporary digital access.

The exhibition also highlights the ongoing work of translation and the challenge of helping people to hear, read, and understand Scripture today.

Exhibition curator the Revd. Canon James Lawrence, Canon Missioner at Blackburn Cathedral, said:

Tyndale 500 brings together the story of Tyndale’s translation, the turbulent world of Tudor England, and the extraordinary technology of the early printing press.

I truly hope this exhibition – the only one of it’s kind anywhere in the north of England – will be of great interest to those visiting as a pilgrim, a history-lover, a reader of Scripture, or those that are simply curious.

Also on display will be a number of other notable Bibles and there are fun activities for children too.

This exhibition is another highlight of the Cathedral’s centenary celebrations, and has greatly excited the Revd. Canon Andrew Horsfall, Interim Dean of Blackburn, who said:

This exhibition presents a remarkable opportunity for people to encounter a piece of history that helped shape both our faith and our language. It will help us remember and celebrate the extraordinary legacy of a man whose vision transformed both the English language and the spiritual life of generations.

I am thrilled that Blackburn Cathedral is hosting this significant exhibition and pray that all who visit will leave with a deeper appreciation of Tyndale’s legacy and a renewed love for the Scriptures that continue to guide and inspire us today.

There is no charge for entry however a suggested of donation of £5 is encouraged to support the costs of hosting the exhibition and enabling the Cathedral to host important events like this in the future.

This exhibition, which is open whenever the Cathedral is open to the public, has been generously supported by the Bible Society and The Friends of Blackburn Cathedral, an independent charity who raise funds to support projects that enhance the fabric and facilities of the Cathedral.
